Claiming Tax back confusion

Hi all,

So here is my query:

I was not working last year until I began work last July my gross wage is £17k per year this works out at £1223 per month excluding tax.

I have been paid approx £9784 for tax year 2010/2011 and I have paid £1600 tax.

I am due any tax back?

Thanks in advance!!

It's not clear if the £9784 is after tax/NI. You need to quote gross figures in order to get more accurate calculations for tax liability.

You can send a copy of your P60 to your tax office to find out if you are entitled to any refund.

what happened between april and july?

what was your taxcode on your earnings?

when you say you paid 1600 tax does that mean just tax or tax and NI?

    Hi,

    thanks pipscot for your reply.

Clapton I was claiming JSA between April and July

    My tax code was 647L

£1600 does not include my NI.

    Thanks again

JSA is taxable so can you say how much JSA you received?
and is 9784 you earned income before tax?

    Hi Clapton,

    Total before tax is £12,800

    I claimed £848 on JSA from April 2010 - July 2010

    Thanks

so your income for the tax year 2010-11

    was 12,800 plus 848 i.e. 13,648

the first 6475 is tax free and the rest is taxed at 20%

so you should have paid tax of 20% of 7173 i.e. £1,434

did you receive a P45 from the DWP
did you give it to your new employer

when you say your tax code was 647L was there any number or letters after it e.g. M1 or W1 or noncum or anything else?
