Is this bloating?

I seem to have the strangest problem in that I can put on up to 4 pounds in 1 day and then lose it again just as quickly:eek: It does seem to be worse around period and ovulation time and its nothing new for me to do this to a lesser extent each month but 4 pounds? You can actually see the difference in my hips and my face:( I'm a size eight anyway so being small probably makes it more noticeable but I actually have to wear my bigger stuff otherwise I'm bulging:rotfl:although I'm laughing (kind of) its annoying and puzzling, so any advice anyone?

I follow a low carb diet and rarely deviate, I drink up to a litre of water a day, I do have the odd diet coke and I'm a smoker, I've tried water tablets (no difference) eating cucumber (no difference) and green tea (yuck, vile stuff and again no difference).

From your description, I would say absolutely (as far as I can, just on how you describe it). It is the scourge of most women, and can range from 1-10lbs water difference. A litre of water isn't a massive amount, and the more water you drink the more water you loose, so you could increase this. Salt and potassium intake will effect body water levels as well as certain foods.

I would suggest increasing water intake around period time and make sure your diet stays regulated - not too much sugar/salt/processed foods. It's not just you, believe me!

Yes - I can fluctuate anything up to 8lbs in a day and it usually last four-five days.

TBH I have tried lots of things - I regularly go to the gym, we eat a healthy (most of the time) balanced ( I balance the healthy stuff out with the odd treat:p) diet and I don't drink too much but even if I drink more or less water, cut out carbs or change levels of protiens/salts/sugars etc nothing seems to make any difference.

Sorry not a lot of help but I just accept it now!!!

The only thing I will say is that it has got worse as I have got older - it is only on the last few years I have really noticed it and I am 38?

Do you - like many of us - unintentionally increase your carb intake just before your period? That may well also account for your weight fluctuation, facial bloating etc, esp if you are very strict with carbs for the rest of the month. It's when the bloating persists on most days, and is accompanied by pain and reduced appetite that you need to see a doctor.

A quick trick you can try is to pinch your skin. If it rtns to normal faster during your bloated time ccompared with the rest of the month, it will indicate that you are better hydrated.

Give it 10 years and it won't be a problem any more! :rotfl:(At 37 I console myself with this same fact).

Thanks everyone, I feel a bit better now (I think);)

VfM4meplse - yes I do increase my carb intake slightly around totm and mid cycle not by a lot but still an increase, its going to misery if I have to watch that too:( I dont have any of the other symptoms though so thats good.

jamsandwich - 8 lbs? gosh thats a lot:eek: poor you:( it has certainly got worse as I've got older and particularly bad the past six months or so (I'm 42)

murphydog999 - I really am good with my diet, I just cant drink anymore water I spend enough time in the loo as it is but I could cut down my salt intake its another thing I crave at totm.

Thanks again everyone, so has anyone tried anything that actually works? even something that just helps a bit?

Aye - I have really big pants with elasticated waist for those days:rotfl:

I do find that going to the gym more helps a little bit but that could be just because I feel better in myself for doing a bit more if you get my drift?

I've suffered (to a greater or lesser extent) from IBS for most of my adult life (I'm now 36). I went onto depo maybe about 8 years ago and I (now) think that was about the time my major symptoms eased to leave just mild symptoms. The reason I think that is because last year I had to come off depo (they don't like you being on it for that long). Since then my IBS symptoms have got steadily worse. I am convinced that the hormones in depo somehow eased my IBS symptoms.

I'm not saying depo will help, from what I've read we all respond to different contraception in different ways. But hormones could be a factor.
