It's about 8 years since I did it, so things may have changed, but at that time I had a brief telephone interview (standard sort of questions, what have you done, why do you want to work for Asda, what do you think you have to offer). That was followed up by a day of various group exercises - one where you were paired off and had to 'get to know' another candidate and then introduce them to the group; one where you were split into teams and had to perform an advert for a product we were given, stuff like that. It was quite informal and I think mostly just to prove you can talk to strangers and work in a team. On the same day everybody had a one-to-one interview with one of the managers. Again, standard sort of interview questions, nothing out of the blue.

I worked for ASDA from 2007-2008. Assuming it hasn't changed that much since this is what happened with me.

I sent of an application form. Received a letter a week or two later asking me to attend a group interview. I think they wanted my documents (passport / id etc) at this point but cant remember.

They first buddied is up in twos and we had to ask each other as much information about the other person as we could get. Then they made us stand up and introduce our new buddy to the group. As someone who is not comfortable standing up in front of everyone I was excrementing bricks.

We were then given a piece of weird fruit from the Grocery department (we had a Grenadine I think), and we had to come up as a group of all the ways it could be used (weird things, like you could carve it out and make it a pumpkin). I'm not sure what the point of this was other to prove that you could think outside the box when selling crap to customers. The group then had to nominate someone to read out to the room how the piece of fruit could be used. They were kind enough to nominate me again, which I think probably backfired on the lazy ones in the group

We were then told that we would receive a letter to attend a one to one interview with the department manager if we were successful.

As nerve-wracking as it is to get up in front of random people and do all that, it paid off because I got the job.

In my own personal experience, I was extremely unhappy with the treatment of other colleagues in my time there, and ultimately the treatment of myself. I came to the conclusion that this was the reason behind high staff turnovers in supermarkets. When I travelled home from uni (~200 miles northwards), I witnessed similar behaviour in a local Tesco. I hope you don't experience the same here and wish you all the best at the interview.

If you need any more info, although I don't know what else I can provide, feel free to ask some more

First interview is a magic session where you are given different tasks.
For me, I was put in a pair. We had to find out 4 facts about the other person plus something random (it was name, age, reason for wanting to work for asda and favourite food/why) then you had to stand up infront of everyone and tell them about your partner.
Next, they put us in 4's and gave us a product and we had to be a customer/colleague/manager and conduct a roleplay eg selling a product/doing a return, Very easy. Just be friendly, smile and say "Is there anything else I can help you with?" at the end.
Then we were given 2 products and had to sort of sell them to the rest of the group. Discuss the pro's of it and then suggest a price. All in fun.

I then got asked to come back for a section leader interview so let me know if you want to know more about that. Didn't have the colleague interview in the middle so not sure about that.

Just relax in magic, they want you to smile and stand out but not overpower.

(This was middle of last year but I was on the recuritment team until i left recently so I know its still the same.) HTH.
