I would advise against telling them you have children. I know employers are not 'allowed' to refuse you a job because you have children, but they do!

I had a 2nd interview for a job, was really honest and told them I had a son at school, but that I had permanent reliable childcare (mum). Didn't get the job! My friend works there and told me that they didn't want people with kids and that's why I didn't get it!

Unfair, but true. So be careful with how honest you are about your personal situation.

Sounds like steering clear of mentioning the kids unless asked is the better option. Yes I see what you mean Emmzi, I'm not mentioning why I want to work for them, I'll have to rejig that a bit :)

Another reason for not mentioning the children is the obvious question of how you intend to spend quality time with them if you're working full-time!

That's easy, by not working at night when they're home, and working just during the day when they're at school :D

Anyhoo, been for the interview, but don't think it went well. They kept mentioning how I hadn't had experience in that particular industry, and even when I talked about transferable skills they didn't seem impressed. Hey ho, there's always next time.

The problem at the moment is that, with so much competition for jobs, they usually would want someone with the exact experience. I'm sure a few years ago, it wouldn't have mattered so much, as long as you had the right skills.

But you might still turn out to be the best person for the job anyway, you don't know who you're up against. Good luck :)
