Couldn't give a Cahoot

On 28/04 we received a letter from Cahoot bank to a previous address we lived at saying we owed them money and they would issue a default within 28 days of the situation wasn't resolved. We sent a letter by recorded mail in reply saying we haven't banked with them for 7.5 years, had no correspondence or statements since then. A few days later they sent another letter stating that they would be issuing recovery instruction for monies owed. We rang them up but as we were unable to remember account security so they wouldn't speak to us. We spoke to customer services (getting names, times and dates) who agreed to send out forms to reset account security.
Anyone dealt with this before? Were do we stand?

Does anything show on your credit reference agency files?
Best advice is to get a £2 report from each agency at least once a year just to make sure nothing is lurking in the background. We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
The earth needs us for nothing.
The earth does not belong to us.

If you have had no contact in 7.5 years any debt not time barred in England and Wales? The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

What is curiously missing from the OP's statement - is whether they (the OP) does actually owe cahoot any money.0

TBH it's that long ago I cannot ever remember using the account. But if I did don't you think they should have contacted much sooner?Yellowlawn

Ah I see...so you not really sure..pity you haven't kept the (or any) records. (note for the future - keep everything!)
If you were absolutely sure you owed nothing and had the records to prove it then your reply is "see you in court" and sit back and watch the fun start - but you not in that position unfortuntely.
I can't comment on debt recovery proceedures as I don't know the detailed ins and outs and don't want to give out misleading/bad advice.
Others on this site know far more!0 -

They explain it far better than me. Looks like you owe them nothing. The truth may be out there, but the lies are inside your head. Terry Pratchett

I'd try the Debt-Free Wannabee board. There are people there who know all about 'prove it' letters and 'statute barred' debt and will be able to give you much better advice.0 -

Do I have to repost and risk duplication or can site admin move it?Yellowlawn
