Mobile phones - can you switch off web surfing?

I probably should be able to work this out, but I suspect one of you will know in a trice.
DS (age 11) wants a new mobile phone. He has my old handset, which is just a phone, whereas he wants camera/MP3 etc. His granny wants a phone that is JUST a phone. So she will buy him a new (cheapish) phone, and have his.
Now, as I pay his top-ups, I don't think I'll want him web surfing with it - it's also a matter of parental control of what he accesses. So, is it possible to block or turn off the web access feature on all/some phones or networks?
We're currently thinking of a nokia 2220 or an alcatel OT-708 on the O2 network.
Any advice gratefully accepted

You should be able to just turn it off, but could go a step further and delete the access point settings from the phone setup.
It probably won't take him long to figure it out though with the lure of Facebook etc.
The other option is to contact the network and see if they will disable data on the SIM as part of parental control.0 -
Yes you can disable web access, but doing that will also disable MMS.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0

You can switch off the 3G (mobile Internet) & let him use the WIFI so he can surf from free hot spots0

Well, as yet I'm confident that he will accept that we have turned it off, and he is not allowed to turn it back on. He has access to a PC at home, and can do his facebooking etc from there. We would take the phone away if he tried to change the settings away. The other option is to contact the network and see if they will disable data on the SIM as part of parental control.
Ah, thanks, I'll contact O2 to see if that is possible on his PAYG sim.
Neither of the two models we are looking at have wi-fi so that is not an issueYou can switch off the 3G (mobile Internet) & let him use the WIFI so he can surf from free hot spotsI try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say.

Went into the O2 shop today. According to the chap in the shop, if we change the settings on the phone so it can't connect to t'internet, the network will just download new settings to connect it again (HOW, if it can't connect ??? ) IF he's right, then I'm a bit .
It also seems that if we wanted to allow DS to have SOME web access, we could have a £10 PAYG tariff which limits the data access, and doesn't allow web access to use up all the credit. BUT that then wouldn't include the free calls to other O2 phones
Blimey this is soooo complicated.
As I'm currently on Vodafone, I went in there too. It seems they can't offer a suitable PAYG tarriff, but suggested that I get him a contract, which would offer 900 mins, some texts (can't remember how many) and UNLIMITED data for £15 a month. But that commits me to £15 each month, and gives DS the opportunity to become addicted to his flaming phone.

easy, the vodafone deal maybe unlimited but it may not be unlimited as such as there may well be a limit, my phone has mobile internet and wifi and at home i use the wifi instead of my mobile data which i use when im out and for use as a sat nav0

The handeset only "downloads" new settings the first time the SIM goes in and is powered on, and even then they won't take effect until you select the option to save the 2 SMS messaages that are sent (one for SMS, the other is for internet and MMS).Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -
I have an iCard mobile SIM card and it does not allow internet. Quite handy really I've accidentally clicked it on other networks and it's cost me £2 for the whole day for only just 1 page. iCard is also very cheap at only 2p/minute to landlines and 6p/min to mobiles.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Whoever you spoke to was economical with the truth to say the least - Voda's "unlimited" internet is 500MB a month and you can see on their website that they no longer sell plans that include "unlimited" internet (they got in a bit of trouble over their definition of unlimited last year...)Now free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -
If it's just parental control you require, ISP's default filters are quite restrictive when switched on, I had to opt out of Orange's just to access web forums!0
