We have started down this route and I think it is just a matter of time before smoking is really really considered a social faux pas.

Another reason to be glad I've quit. Saying that, what's to stop passengers exiting the building and simply walking across to the carpark? The last time I was there I checked in my bags and walked out the front door, just the same as you can do in any airport.

I presume this is after they've passed through security

It should be, but the government won't let it be as they make too much money from taxing people for the privilage of long term self harming.

And that means special outdoor areas close to the planes. Must cost a fortune to make those special areas and keep them supervised. I say charge at least £5 a cig.

The article didn't suggest that but I did catch a bit of the news at lunchtime which made me think it was a post-security thing.

Seen the report on news and it showed the smoking enclosure. It's still in the building so it should be still be a no smoking area. Do smoke huts etc not have to be 75% open?

I think strangely enough you can take lighters through security but you aren't allowed them in checked-in luggage.
