Replacement Laptop Fund Challenge

Hi All,

Well, my beloved laptop has finally given up the ghost. :( OH thinks he may be able to get a little more life out of it, to transfer over pics and personal info etc, but that's it. :(

The laptop is my main way of keeping in contact with friends and family back home in the UK, and I was also using it to play games, in particular World of Warcraft.

Now, because I would like to purchase a laptop that services both of those needs, I am looking at a price range of about €800 for a new one!:eek: However, I did see an offer with Dell this morning for €499, which *may* be suitable. I need OH to confirm and is away on business now until tomorrow night.

Either way, I need to raise some money for the new laptop, outside of my usual income. My first thought was to sell the old one on Ebay (once personal stuff removed), and at least recover some of the money. But.....I know that is not going to come anywhere close to the amount of money I need.

Sooo.....I was wondering if you lovely people could give me some hints and tips on how to raise this money. Obviously, I can sell some other stuff on Ebay too, but I am not sure what sells well, and what isn't worth the bother. Otherwise, I am at a bit of a loss. We cannot do a boot sale, as we don't have a car (and I'm not confident enough with my Dutch to talk all day, face to face) and some other options, like mystery shopping are not an option due to our location (Netherlands).

So, wonderful people, do you have any other suggestions for me? Hints and tips? etc?

Thank you. :D

break the laptop into bits , sell keyboard , screen , casing, charger etc seperately. I recently made over £350 selling bits that way as opposed to probably £120 selling the whole units for spares

search on ebay for the seperate bits of your model and total it up

Ahh, that's a great tip Browntoa, thank you! OH has plenty of the smaller, 'specialist' tools to help break down a laptop too, so shouldn't be too difficult.

Been thinking also, that I have a Garmin SatNav in full working order that I haven't used for over 2 years now, so that can go also.

OK, I've been thinking about what else I can sell on Ebay, and looking at that wonderful thread 'things you thought you couldn't sell on ebay' (or something like that) for ideas.

    So far:

Laptop (broken down into parts to be sold separately)
Sat Nav (not sure whether to sell the charger and window sucker things separately or not)
Old shoes (apparantly sell rather well on Ebay)
A Nike duffel bag that I've hardly used
    Empty perfume bottles
    iPod charger
    Belt
    Baseball caps and hats

I'll keep thinking and will start sorting stuff tonight (after Dutch homework is done! lol).

Sorry, not really expecting much replies from people. This just helps me to organise it, and not forget things etc.

    Hi,
Sorry to hear of your laptop.
Can I ask when u say the laptop Is dead what do u mean?
My laptop died- it was2.5 years old, green screen it was the nvidia graphics card that was faulty.
Does your laptop have an nviada graphics card? Other symptoms include overheating and crashing and intermittent wireless issues.
After research, http://www.nvidiadefect.com/ I found that it was an inherent fault known to hp, so under the sales of good act I claimed against the company I bought it from. They admitted fault and I was reimbursed part costs.
Sale of goods act claims you should be to use the product for 5 years regardless of out of warranty.
If this does not sound in anyway familiar, ignore me!
However, likebthe previous poster said I sold my faulty laptop for parts on eBay. I did not dismantle mine and still got 80.00. This s a good tip for something that is of no use to u.

Thanks Kim, but it wasn't the NVidia card. It was a hard disk failure.

But......my OH has managed to fix it this weekend and cleaned it up etc, so am hoping to be able to get another year out of it. This takes the pressure of raising the funds quickly, thankfully!

But, I still need to raise those funds, so I have already listed a few things on Ebay this weekend. Fingers crossed for some monies! :D
