Hot water tank?

I rent my accomdation and am stuck with a large hot water tank. Its regularily serviced and is in top condition but me and my girlfiriend have a difference of opinions.
One of us says we should have it switched on say for an hour in the evening and an hour in the morning to reheat the water thus saving money from the electricity.
The other says if its left on you only need to keep the hot water ticking over and thus saving the required energy to heat up a large tank of water.
Can anyone say who is correct or if there a web page I can go to.

Very diplomatic not saying which one thinks what lol
This is an argument I have with my sister regulary. After comparing for a week doing both I am under the impression that leaving it on all the time is more economical - it must cost less to 'top up' rather than heat a tank from cool. Maybe a good insulated jacket on the tank would change that.
Another point - have you checked the thermostat on the tank - anything over 60 degrees is a waste0 -
Yeah its been turned down and has a jacket so you could argue that it wont lose heat very fast if you stop start it but again it wont lose het just topping up.
Is there a web site I can proove either way.

Leave the cylinder heating on with the thermostat set low, heating cooled down water is more expensive than topping up. How can you service a hot water cylinder? Do you mean check ,well you could do that yourself ,just look for leaks ,do it as often as you like,a year gap ,what is the point? Do you mean that they look at it when you get your boiler serviced? To be happy you need to make someone happy.0

Yeah the boiler is services and they check the tank is not damaged or showing signs of damaged and that the jacket hasn't been damaged in any way that sort of thing.0 -
