If I contact the CSA in order to arrange payments from my ex for our son, do they take anything from my ex themselves? (not payments on behalf of me, but payments in addition to me?)

So if they say he must give me £150 a month, do they then ask him for money as well for the CSA?

just wanted to add, they may reduce certain benefits if you are on them, not sure which, income support is on of them i think, i'm sure somone who knows the ins and outs will be along shortly.

If you are employed, you will get the full amount. There is no fee. You can either get them to do an assessment and your ex can pay the money directly to you, or the money can be paid to them and then they will pass it to you. If there is any risk your ex will not pay go for the latter. The csa will then have immediate evidence that he has not paid, rather than it being your word against his.

Ignore the rumour mungers.

If you are on benefits however, they will be reduced as you now have income from your ex.

This is one of the proposed changes - that parents with care have to pay to have their maintenance calculation made and enforced. I think it has been suggested to stop people applying for maintenance after they have had a row with the non resident parent and then cancelling the claim after a few weeks as these cases take a lot of man power to deal with which could be used completing more cases to get maintenance to the children who need it most. For the time being though there is no charge for the collection of maintenance
