Bye Buy - A year without buying

I remember reading this article about an American woman who decides not to spend on non-essentials for 1 year. Very interesting views and relevant for the debt-free community.

very interesting article. But the thing is I do this already. Eg I don't buy clothes unless my old ones are too worn out to be acceptable in public!! I have one pair of boots that I wear every day. I only buy the children one pair of shoes at a time, which they trash by the time their feet have grown to get another pair.
I guess we on the dfw board are (now) more like this lady in that we are more discriminating about what we buy.

Am I the only one who finds it just a tad ironic that she's now selling a (rather expensive) book about it?

    I thought that too!

Ha! I do that already! I have decided the only way I can possibly get one up on this is to stop buying bog roll...

Well, considering she classed a New York Times as an essential, she could actually have stopped buying bog roll as well! LOL

I think I've only bought a pair of shoes over the last 18 months. And that was because my others were leaking altho' I do also have a pair of trainers!

I found 2 pairs of trousers from years ago which I'd completely forgotten when all other winter trousers could no longer be mended and I spent time in the summer cutting the pockets off summer trousers to make patches which matched.

I'm looking forward to buying some new clothes!!! But not until I've got rid of the cc debt. You should see the state of my underwear, well actually I'd die if you did but ykwim.

Not that I'm saintly I'd just rather fall off the wagon to eat out than buy clothes!

I agree totally: anything she's announcing with fanfare that she's going to give up will just be par for the course for anyone on the DFW board. What's the big deal? At the same time it will get the concept out there to loads of other people who think spending's just a normal part of life, so I guess the book is a good thing. As for the priceyness of the book, it always has been a time-honoured way to make money – write a book about how to make money and sell it to other people!!
