Name on Deeds = Name on Mortgage?

Options
Hi guys,
Quick question, do the names on a mortgage need to match the names on the property deeds?
Reason I ask is, my wife and I are looking to buy a property and for the initial few years I will be the sole person on the mortgage but I would like to put her name on the deeds. Is this possible?
Thanks in advance.

  • The mortgage company will not allow your wife to be on the deeds (a primary claim to owning the property) unless she accepts the joint and several liability for the mortgage secured on the property.

Be aware that many lenders will not allow you to have a mortgage in your own right only, when married and living as a couple, without a valid/acceptable reason and taking any credit rating issues into account for you both.
