Everyone has weaknesses, one of my biggest is books! I love the way they feel in your hand, the way they smell, the way they take you to other worlds/ to different situations. I might go so far as to say i'd choose a book over chocolate every time!!!

So I'm on a mission, from the 1st of May 2011 to the 1st of May 2012, I will not purchase any more books!!!! So the options:

The library - Borrow books and return them
or
Swap with friends
or
Readitswapit - a site for swapping books but you pay postage for sending to your recipient

The top two options are free so are preferable however, I tend to read lots of series of books and collect the ones that I love so Readitswapit will cater for that. For me and my partner we have an allowance of £100 per month each so I'm setting myself a limit of £5 for book postage per month and no more.

So does anyone want to join me in my mission???

NikkeiJones - No Buy £5 postage for swap a month
Rising From The Ashes - £5 spend limit per month
Odette - £5 save per month towards an e-reader

  • Ohhhhhh I'm a bookworm too!

It's funny as a lot of my friends now have those K*indle things but they just wouldn't be the same for me - I too like to hold a proper book in my hands!

I've just rejoined the library (membership had lapsed whilst I was studying - couldn't take any books out or I'd read them rather than work).

There's a place not too far from me that deals in 2nd hand books - you take your "old" books and get trade them in for ones you've not read. There may be something similar near you.

I don't think I could go without buying any for a whole year as I also read "series" and new ones may be coming out - the library takes AGES to get some of these and probably couldn't wait that long!

I'd try for a £5/month limit if that'd be OK?

  • As an addicted reader myself I share your sentiments exactly and would love to join in BUT I would absolutely and instantly fail so I that's me out!!!!! No willpower at all!!!

Good luck and hopefully people with more backbone than me will join you.

Good luck, I will keep watching this thread with interest

    From a mightily big coward!!!
  • Rising From The Ashes - Lovely to have you! I wanted a kindle too but books are more expensive on there than you can buy a book and have it shipped out for so it's on hold for now!

Theblueone - Yeah there are certain things that make me feel like that too! Maybe we'll be able to convince you to join us if you stick around for a while :p You can amend the rules to cover your needs and goals too!!!

I would love to join! Usually I am pretty good at going to the library but the selection is pretty dire at the moment.... I can afford books (Im DF) but I really would love an ereader so I was thinking about saving for one but it seems impossible (savings and extra money directed at more important things at the moment!).
I hope you dont mind but you both seem to have a £5 pm limit so I am going to (if you dont mind) put £5 a month away to save for an ereader and follow you guys :)
Aim - BUYING A HOUSE  by November 2013!
    Saved = 100% on 03/07/12 :j
  • Im a total bookaholic too but I detest second hand books and library books with a passion

Against my better judgement I bought a Kindle and I LOVE it, its saved me an absolute fortune, I have about 200 books on it at the moment and have spent about a fiver.
