Adult onset eczema

Thanks for all the replies!
I popped into Lush today and got a few little sample pots to test. Also picked up the steroid cream from the pharmacy today, they didn't seem to have any cream samples for me to try, will try a smaller local one next time rather than a big chain.
I doubt it is our washing detergent, as not only do we swap it around a lot, (whatever is cheap/on special) but the eczema seems to be mostly on my face and neck, which don't have prolonged contact with clothing...
I am hoping that I can get it under control with the steriod cream, then keep it at bay with moisturisers. Fingers crossed!Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0 -
Babyshoes - it may be the fact that you are swapping you wash powder around that 'caused' this. You may not have you clothes in contact with you head, face and neck - but your sheets are on them probably 7hrs a night - what do you wash those in??
Only saying as the exact same thing happened to me - and I came to the conclusion it was my washpowder. You may want to go back to a brand you were using when your skin was not so sensitive, and stick with it. That's what I did - I now only buy that brand, and buy tones of it when there is a special offer.Scrappie

I also have eczema which started around 2 years ago (I'm 35).
I have tried dozens and dozens of lotions and potions, prescribed and bought. Nothing yet has cured it, but I can, to a point, control how bad / itchy it gets, although I think with it being on your face makes it tricker.
Check out or face wash /shower gel (if you use) I try and only use products without SLS's also your shampoo remembering that the chances are this will run down your face and neck when washing your hair. (dr Organics from Holland and Barret arent to bad and not to ££)
Aquious cream can be great but again a lot of them actually contain Sodium Lauryl Sulphate which sort of defeats the object, you have no idea hpw long it took me to work this out as all the pots look pretty much the same (if you get them from £land 99p shop
) sometimes i loved it other it drove me nuts itching, then I read the ingrediants!!!
Washing powder / liquid either use half or dilute, its easier to rinse still gets your clothes clean (99.9% of the time) and will save you money, I do go for the more "natural" ranges Tescos is ok, which can be a quid or so more.
Towels and sheets wash on a hot wash (60+) as this kills dust mites, or so they tell me, which can make it worse. In face it might be worth giving your pillows a wash / steam if poss, make sure your not sleeping on something thats irritating you.
Good luck with it, I am so desperate to get rid of mine (one leg, thats all) I cant imagine what I'd be like if it was my face.
YDSMI wish I would take my own advice!0 -
i get a few patches now and again and use Aveeno, dont seem to have any patches for a while so I am happy
Aveeno is currently on offer in Superdrug, I use the one for very dry skin with shea butter
It has no smell and is a fairly think consistency but I think it is brilliant for my skin0 -
I just made a cream for my friend with eczema. I whipped unrefined Shea butter with organic virgin coconut oil, olive oil, emu oil, jojoba and some essential oils. It was easy to do and she said it is helping, she started with a test patch.
An elderly relative has had eczema most of her adult life, mostly on her hands and feet, and has always used steroid creams, E45 and baby oil. (She would never listen to me!) It has never cleared up and her skin now is dreadful.
I hope it get's better soon.0 -
Try pure potions skin salvation, its been in the news recently, I don't have eczema but have had really dry skin recently and its helped so much!

I found no one tells you how often you need to apply the cream. I have ecezma on my hands which has greatly improved since my son developed bad ecezma all over and we had to put cream on him every hour, you need to put it on frequently before your skin drys out. We use oilatum for him as I can get it on perscription but i also found aveeno to be great - it actually reduced the redness within a couple of hours.0

>My hands seem to be very dry too<
Worst area for me. I find I have to avoid any contact with any detergents and household chemicals.
E45 I can't be doing with, not sure why.
I have a very strict regime of using Boots traditional skin cream then cotton gloves if I am doing any work around the house, which brings me into contact with dust, chemicals etc. For the garden I use XXL leather gloves over the cotton and loads of moisturiser to avoid the skin getting broken. Any direct contact with sap or the earth I don't like
At night, very sparing application of steroid cream (if needed) then Boots vitamin A+E skin cream then cotton gloves, A+E I also use on face. I go through loads of gloves, but you can buy them quite cheaply off Ebay.
For anything wet, I use disposable powder-free vinyl gloves (latex is a trigger) but for a maximum of 10 minutes and then moisturise.
I take a pair of cotton gloves with me everywhere, I've even found that new plastic on the steering wheel of a rental care was a trigger...
Also the only face wash I can use is Clearasil skin perfecting wash Sensitive, anything else with a soap in it and I can feel the skin start to 'crawl' within minutes.0 -
Could be the lanolin. None of mine can use the cream, but DH always uses the 'wash' product as he finds that's the best thing for him.J_J_Carter wrote: »E45 I can't be doing with, not sure why.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Hi babyshoes

I was first diagnosed with eczema while pregnant with my son 17 years ago at the age of 20 and have suffered with it ever since. Recently I have started my own research into what works best as diprobase - which I have used for a long time - is now not having much effect and I believe it could actually be making it worse
I have used Neals Yard products for a good couple of years as part of my skincare regime and now have started in the last couple of weeks to use the Wild Rose Balm on my hands in the nights and it's working really well
There are no parabens, SLS's or any other nasties - all the ingredients are on every label and you can research each one of them and they are all nice ingredients - I know because I've researched it myself
Neals Yard also do products specifically for eczema, dermatititus and other skin conditions so it's well worth googling and having a look. Personally I'm going to treat myself to some
Good luck and I hope you find your solution soon x
Jen
