What's the difference
. I was reading a recipe for non alcoholic cocktails and it mentioned 1 part ginger ale and 1 part ginger beer. I'd always thought they were the same thing?

There's a difference, mind you it's years since I've drunk either - I'd say ginger beer is sweeter and typically a bit cloudy, children like it. Ginger ale isn't as sweet, is clear and children don't like it much.0

They are very very different drinks. I don't know what the technical difference is, but they are nothing like each other.
Ginfer Ale is a not very fizzy, very dry, drink. As Benood says, children don't like it very much: there isn't much to like to be honets. Think of it as an I would say it's an easy way of adding a bit of ginger to other drinks (Whisky & Ginger for example). Ginger Ale is the standard mixer used.
If you added Lemonade to Ginger Ale you might get something a bit more like Ginger Beer, but it still wouldn't be the same.
Ginger Beer is (unless you get a really awful one) hot, fiery, a little to a lot fizzy, maybe sweet (depends on the brand), burns your throat a bit. Ginger Beer is called Beer because it is made from a yeast "plant". It is a typical long drink, served on its own over ice, and is a great summer cooler.
Sometimes you add Ginger Beer to other drinks - for example, a Moscow Mule is Vodka and Ginger Beer, but the idea there is that you are adding sweetness and volume to the drink as well as ginger.
Not sure if that helps.0
