Costco: question re payment

I asked at the Oldham branch if my husband could pay (as I am the Costco cardholder) and was told he could by debit card or cash, but he couldn't pay by cheque.
In the same week my In laws went to the Derby branch. FIL is the Costco card holder, MIL offered her debit card at the till and was told, rather brusquely I gather, that payment has to be from the Costco card holder - fortunately FIL had his debit card on him. So to my question, which is the correct information? Does anyone know? This could be disasterous if I was relying on OH to pay and they refused to accept it.

The website has the answer:
http://www.costco.co.uk/Membership_home/Terms_conds/terms_condition.htm
"1. We welcome cash, cheques and debit cards. We do not accept credit cards.
2. Cheques must be in the exact amount, issued on the member's account and pre-printed with the members name. Debit cards must be in the member's name.
7. Only members with valid membership cards may purchase items at Costco, although we welcome two guests per cardholder they can't shop."
Best make sure OH has been to the cashpoint next time! I think all Costco have an ATM now just in case.

TBH if you're worried and you can trust the cardholder then give them your pin. Because the staff don't even see the card really you should be fine.
In the Glasgow store my friend and I split our shopping and paid separately without a single problem...Waddle you do eh?0 -
FWIW I joined last week at Head Office in Watford and was told that the two guests COULD shop, but had to pay cash.
If you're paying by debit card anyway, all the branches have a cash point (free one) near Customer Services, so if you're worried, just get the cash out first.0 -
I take my next door neighbout with me regularly and she always pays with her own debit card!

Thanks for the replies. I was just hoping for some clarification as it seems the in laws and I were given conflicting information. It seems it's a lottery, depends which member of staff you get on the day! MIL has paid with her debit card on a previous trip apparently, and was a bit miffed when she was refused on this occasion. TBH it seems a bit daft, surely as long as somebody pays by an accepted method....Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0
