What about moving out of such a crap place?

    Yes quite.
Why not move somewhere that has public transport?
I can get to work by car, motorbike, bicycle, bus or train.
If I couldn't part then I'd simply get the train and walk.

What about buying a folding bike, parking the car a few miles away (somewhere free) and cycling in the last part of the journey?

I've just started cycling from Dorking to Leatherhead (first couple of stops) then taking my folding bike onto the train and at Waterloo cycling to work rather than getting the tube. It's actually fitness/weight loss driven rather than financial but it does save me about £7.50 a day, but more importantly gives me 17 miles of cycling and only adds about 15 mins to my journey each way.

Just want to make it clear, I'm not bemoaning my lot. Just having a rant on silly second home stuff etc.

But that's a good idea. Not sure where I could actually park outside of the town as it's all A roads for 8 miles until the next one. But it's certainly something I'd look into. I used to park in the park and ride and then walk when I didn't have stuff to carry. That was also fitness motivated. Just haven't bothered this year, and the cost is the same anyway. I can use either or, the parking in town or the service. Service just adds an extra 45 mins to your working day. Will have to start the walking again soon, but liking the idea of the folding bike instead of walking, even if it doesnt solve the parking costs dilema.

Erm, family, friends, son, happy living here.

Just ranting about the council and second properties. Things could be done, but they are not.

If you need to buy a bike ask if your employer is part of the the bike2work scheme:

I've already got a decent bike but I may consider getting another one.

Doubt this scheme is offered in many places at all in the south west in all honesty.

    My employer won't do it.
Don't know why, but I suspect they don't want the admin.
    Good suggestion though.

Back on topic, I think anyone hoping for rapid rises will be dissapointed.
We have public sector cuts & unemployment on the way.
Hopefully the private sector can take some of the slack, but any recovery is expected to be very slow under these conditions.
Interest rates will rise very slowly.

I think it will be 10 years before rates are even 5%.

The baby boomers will be mortgage free. We made it. This is our time.

    it will be.

Many people make use it and never actually ride to work.

If you are VAT registered and on basic rate tax (I assume you pay yourself in dividends as well), you would save approx 40% on the cost of a bike (and helmut etc).

If you get a folding bike, get a Brompton. They're the cheapest folding bikes on the market.

The reason such an expensive bike is cheap?

If you buy another one you'll regret it and buy a Brompton in the end. If you go straight to the Brompton you cut out the expensive first step.
