I want to buy a couple of items from a US seller on the internet - total cost £30.00 plus £8.00 courier charges. Can anyone advise me how much import duty I would be liable to and want is the procedure for paying such duties?
Thanks

duty varies depending on what it is and vat must be added to the total (inc postage i think)
edit
and there is an £8 handling charge
Sometimes they don't bother, maybe a third of the thing i've recieved have no bill attached0 -
The seller send the item, they fix a customs label to the package stateing value and weight and if customs decide to stop it they then instruct the delivery company to collect any duties that are due on the item. So you would pay the royal mail for the item if it was sent by standard post. I received somthing from the us a few years ago value of about £90 it was a trade I sen somthing the other way of similar value, it cost me £33 to collect the item from the post office. part of it is VAT and the other part is a charge to post office add for collecting the item from customs.
I still trade with friends in the US but they mark the items as a gift and the value below $30.0
