What makes a good Lawyer?

What really make a good lawyer? Was it by experience or grade or individual trait?

I have seen few lawyers who qualify about 7 years ago but have been sought-after. What is the secret of their success?

Barristers & Solicitors in the house, what is the secret?

Cheers.

A good level of English and the ability to do your own research.

The secret is being born into a well off and well connected family.

Whilst it certainly helps, many people make it without having connections and financial backing.

From a perspective of hiring solicitors on a couple of occasions: female ones who do a passable impression of an annoyed Pitbull with PMT, and have never heard the word mediation, work for me.

Being able to build a coherent argument is paramount.

I've known a few solicitors and they told me a student is better off studying English, History or Philosophy first then study Law at postgraduate level.

You are right. I know a top barrister that was also a history graduate.

I don't know. It's hard to get a good start as a lawyer.

I know stacks who are qualified but can't get their first job, or end up sitting in a cramped little office over a kebab shop dealing with nothing but immigration appeals for tiny fees, or who give up completely.

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.

I started a law course, but realised do not have the fortitude to deal with lies all the time. Some of the work will be very distasteful.

Going on what my brother said, the ability to leave your morals at the door and argue the sky is pink or if you accept its blue, what shade of blue it is until the day you die. Because of the former reason, he left as he was unable to distance himself from his morals and as a result didn't do well.

Coupled with this is the morals of happily stepping all over your peers to move on, as ones success often comes at the detriment to another (or many others) who then have to move on etc. Or so I hear.
    Thinking critically since 1996....
