I travel a 35 mile round trip everyday to work ,have done so for 31 years
Roads have improved vastly in that time and the majority of it is now duel carrigeway and now takes 25 mins to get to work instead of 45

Yes i get fed up with it ,yes i would love to work somewhere within walking distance but it isnt going to happen so you just get on with it
    Have a nice day :)

I'm guessing you didn't cycle the 70 miles though! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

(Sorry, I'm in a silly mood, must be all these bank holidays!)

    I've been Money Tipped!
Currently I have a 3 minute walk to work :)

The only way for me to get a better paid job is to consider commuting around 1.5 hours + each way (including 2 buses and a boat).

I would think in terms of time rather than distance, because that's what affects your day the most. 12-17 miles shouldn't be too bad?

    Hi all.
Thank-you for all your replies, just to clarify I am not completely against travelling that distance, but just wanted a general consensus of how far everyone-else commuted to work.

It appeared to be a long distance to me, as the furthest I've driven is nearly 10 miles in my short time as a driver.
I live in a big city, and I am fortunate all my education/jobs have been within my home city, which didn't require a significant amount of travelling.

I'm sure everyone would like a quite a quick/easy commute to work, but in this climate many like me would be glad for anything, and after reading everyones commuting distances on here, I feel kind of foolish for asking about such a relatively small distance.
I have taken on board some of your suggestions about downsizing my car, and feel much more comfortable with this commuting idea. :)

I'd love to only have 17 miles to commute to work. As I work in payroll, there are no jobs at all in my local town. I have to commute 45 miles to the nearest city. I'm on £21.5k and it costs me about £185 a month for a railcard.

My own commute can vary although I do work from home I can go anywhere in the UK or the world depending on what my clients want me to organise and where they are.

When I was an employee (about 4 years ago) - I decided that although I worked in Birmingham, I would spend a lot of time with my then boyfriend in South London, I used to drive up and down the motorway every day and I was always behind my desk at 7.30am.

Thinking back over my employed life I don't think I have ever worked anywhere that was a mile or two from home, all involved a commute of around 20 or so miles plus.

I know that if you looked for work via the jobcentre they would expect you to look for work in a 50 mile radius of where you live.

In the end it all comes down to how much you want - and enjoy - the work you'd be doing. I commuted 65 miles each way, every day, for nearly three years - but this was round the M25, so most mornings I was sat in traffic. I took the job because of ambition, and so was "happy" to make the sacrifice as I thought it would lead to bigger and better things.

If you're just looking to make ends meet, then it becomes an issue - as time went on, I grew to hate the job and resented driving for 4 hours every day and being treated like crap at work just to pay the bills - and it didn't matter what the salary was - they could have paid me £200k and I'd still have hated it.

Only you know what you're willing to do. Long term, it may prove unsustainable, but if it was for a job that made me properly happy, I'd circumnavigate the globe for it...
