BR1 Tax code
Comments
-
BR1 is a code that indicates 100% of your pay will be taxed at 20% (BR = basic rate) the '1' will likely indicate month one of the tax year (which April is) so that bit at least makes sense.
The code means that you currently have no access to your tax free allowances, which is most likely why your tax has gone up. I have seen these before where HMRC has you down as having two employers - if you do not you should call them immediately.
It is technically possible that payroll / HR have defaulted you to this code as they have not received a coding notice for the 11/12 tax year - however this would be very unusual. More likely is that HR did not set this code. Assuming this (and either way) only HMRC have the power to change it by issuing you/your employer with the correct coding notice.
The upshot of all of the above is - call HMRC asap!!Go round the green binbags. Turn right at the mouldy George Elliot, forward, forward, and turn left....at the dead badger0 -

After 27 minutes on hold  I got through to "Chris" at HMRC who has issued me with a new tax code, which wont reach HR in time for payroll.
Anyway, it turns out that HMRC thought that this was a secondary job, but couldn't tell me what the other one was as they didn't know! :eek:Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -
"On hold", lucky you. I went through half a dozen options, each time it had about 6 choices. Finally got were I think I wanted to be, only for another recording to say "we cannot deal with your enquiry at the moment, please call back later".
I decided to write, but don't expect a response any time soon.
Look on the bright side, you'll get a tax refund - eventually.Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.0 -

You should get a refund of the extra tax you paid. Don't think they're very quick in issuing refunds though lol0
