Just Received a 'Check of Self Assessment'

in Cutting tax
Since Oct 2008 I became a fulltime employee and asked my tax office to stop sending the self assessment form. In 2009 they STILL send the form to me so I decided to fill in the Self Assessment anyways and thinking as my employer deducts the tax from my salary I would just fill the boxes with £0.00.
In the 'Check of Self Assessment Tax Return' letter they have listed I need to pay £522 when I have a pay slip from April 2009 stating that I have paid £521.98.
I called the tax officer and he said that I still need to pay £522 because I filled my tax return incorrectly. This makes no sense to me and I hope somebody out there could let me know if I'm in the wrong or are they? and if they are what can I do to correct it.
Thanks in advance.

And now they are saying I owe £800 because in 2008 when I was self employed and I earned £3000. In two years being self employed I only made £6000.
Really confused.0 -
I finished self employment in Oct 2008 which is when I started in fulltime employment.0

Ok (by 2008 i took you to mean the tax year ending April 2008!)
When you completed your 2008/2009 tax return, you should have included details of both the self-employed income for the period 6th April 2008 to Oct 2008 AND the employed income for the period Oct 2008 to 5th April 2009. Did you complete the return or did you have an accountant do it for you?0 -
I'm afraid I completed it. :-(0

in the self-employment section I entered the amount I made during my self employment correctly. I must of entered £0.00 for employment (stupid...)
In the check of self assessment tax return letter
Company name
Figure from your return: £0.00
Figure from payer: £9,682.00
Tax figure from your return: £0.00
Tax figure from payer £522.00
Difference: £522.00
P.S I have a slip showing £522.00 being deducted from my salary as proof.0 -

Does the letter actually say that you need to pay this £522? It looks from the above figures that they are saying that they already know you have paid the £522.
The £800 in self assessment tax looks about right. Based on a total income of £12,682 (£3000 from self employment and £9682 from employement) your total tax liability for the year would be £1329.40 of which £522 is from employment as you have said and £807.40 outstanding to pay.0 -
When I called the Tax officer he kept saying I needed to pay £522.
Thanks for clearing things up for me, the sum £800 makes sense to me now. I will check my records when I get home. I remember paying £350 to them back in Jan 2009 (I'm guessing for tax year 2008).
Thanks.0 -
So you earned £3000 in self-employment and £9682 from employment in the same tax year? Even though you paid the correct tax for your employment, you needed to put those figures into your tax return because that £9682 would have taken you above the tax threshold. If all you declared was the £3000, that would have appeared to be below the threshold, which is why you weren't asked to pay the tax on that amount at the time.0
