Voluntary Surrender v Voluntary Termination?

Hi,
Is there a difference between 'voluntary surrender' of a hp agreement and 'voluntary termination'?
I have a solicitors letter turned up requesting i pay £8054.90, after i voluntary surrendered my car last year.
I was told by the finance company that as i had paid over 50% i could hand the car back and owe nothing, now this!
Any help would be really appreciated
