Voluntary Surrender v Volutary Tremination?

Hi,
Is there a difference between 'voluntary surrender' of a hp agreement and 'voluntary termination'?
I have a solicitors letter turned up requesting i pay £8054.90, after i voluntarily surrendered my car last year. I was advised by the finance company, that as i had paid over 50% back i could give the car back without owing any money.
Any advice would be really apprecaited!
