Ditching the bus pass!.. back to walking!

Up until recently I walked everywhere!! moved in with OH and a little bit further away.. from 3.5 miles to 4.6 miles from town, OH encouraged me to get bus pass until things settled! Well 2 months later, I think I am well and truly settled..time to get back to walking everywhere and back ..to saving £65 a mnth

Any fabulous tips for carrying groceries/footwear tips??

Will be 9-10 miles each day I should think, my feet are awful from dancing and regular running, think I will invest in some better shoes eventually. But for now will be thinking the best way to economically stop and get some shopping once a week for just lil old me! (OH can get his own!! :rotfl:)

Any other ex bus-pass owners hehehe ... should thinking any frozen things will be okay for a short journey??

Thanks in advance for the tips guys :)

    1) Good move ditching the bus pass!!

    2) Bring a large backpack and minimal everything else on days when you're going to shop on the way home. Frozen things will be fine. Do you have an idea of how much you can comfortably carry for that distance? I'd only buy lighter foods on your first trip (ie, no bags of spuds! keep it under 5kg total) and see how you cope. I carry my shopping just 2 miles in shopping bags/B4L bags and that kills me shoulders! I need a backpack!
Do you have somewhere at work you can leave a pair of "work shoes"? Get some cheap and ugly walking shoe type things from shoe zone/sports direct and change into smarter footwear at work. You'll find smart shoes comfortable enough to do the walking in, but the soles will wear down incredibly quickly and they'll get tatty fast.

    Hi

Get yourself a shopping trolley. :) There are some lovely ones out there now, there is a list of stockists on the first post in this thread:

I did this recently. What I can recommend is, if you have the time, not just going once a week. It's easier to walk the whole journey a few times a week carrying less than to walk it just once with all your shopping, no breeze, the sun on your back... you don't want to put yourself off either, or you'll be back to the bus pass in no time! Good luck! :)

Beocme a trolly dolly - so much easier than lugging bags! From your meal plans/ dietry restrictions you won't have much to carry!

I go through long periods of not eating, so I wont need food every week!! at the moment I cant, so wont need anything now this week or next most likely.

There wont be any bags of spuds or anything too heavy when I do go!

We have a little fold up luggage trolley thing that fits inside a back pack. That has been very handy with a couple of bungees to tie the full back pack to when laden. It is so much easier to NOT have to wheel the empty trolley on the way there. One pocket of the backpack carries a bottle of water and the other a rolled up sun hat. If you have a fold up bag as well, you can strap that to the trolley and the backpack to your back.

I am trying to stick to £7- £8 a week, so online may be a bit much. My OH does his online, so can always put heavier items in there with his.

Aah that does sound good culpepper!

Thanks again guys :) last day of my pass today!

Walking commences in the morning :) cant wait!

I do the majority of my shopping budget on foot. About £60 online the other £180 is all done on foot.

I've no doubt that the trolleys are by far and away the best way to go, and I know they do some great designs, but I still associate them with, shall I say, the "extremely mature" person ;) - and I'm not ready for that yet.

So the majority - or should I say the heaviest - of my shopping goes on my back. I have discovered though, that just because I can get ALL my shopping in my backpack, it doesn't necessarily mean that it does my back any good. So I have two good strong carrier bags (Te$co woven ones with the ladybirds on) and split the weight between the three.

I would rather put it all in my backpack and leave my hands free, but my back really doesn't appreciate it.

My journey is only 1½mile round trip (so nothing compared to yours) but what I have also discovered, is what doesn't appear to weigh very much when you buy it in the shop, weighs a whole lot more by the time you've humped it home.

Always take water with you. I also always have Dextr0se tablets with me, as sometimes, when I've overdone it, the weight of my bags can sap my energy and make me feel a bit shaky. Also, wear layers, so that you can remove something if it's hot, or the weight of your bags make you hot.

Whatever you decide to put on your feet, just make sure they're very, very comfortable :)

If you're intending to walk ten miles a day then you're going to need to eat enough to do it tbh. Otherwise you'll end up very ill indeed.
