Wife works i don't would i be able to claim benefits?

My wife works full time and we also received tax credits but this has been stopped now(thanks conservatives)
I have been looking after our young daughter so have not been working.
Now as the tax credits have stopped i am looking for a part time job.
Can i claim unemployment in the meantime?

It would depend on how long you have been not working. If you have contributions in the applicable years you may be able to get Contribution based for a while. I can't work out which applicable tax years they are using at the moment so pretty much the only way to see is if you apply.

Well done to the tories, It sees as if you were capable of working part time and looking after your daughter but you chose not to because of the tax credits coming in.

Well done the conservatives! They have encouraged you to get back to work, or at least looking for it. Presumably you thought why should i work, my wife earns more than me and I can sit at home and get money for nowt. Now they have sensibly removed the money for nowt from you, you now realise you have to work for your money. Why should you get jobseekers allowance? you've not been looking for a job!
    Congratulations again to the Tories

If it was the woman though, it used to be traditional that a woman would stay at home and look after the children whilst the men went out to work. The situation is now that employers are subsidized by tax credits, so they can pay a wage which doesn't support a family forcing the other parent out to work and farming out children to outside childcare providers. Personally, I would have loved to be in a position that I could stay at home and look after my children - afterall, they are mine! But no, we can't afford to live if only one person worked, so I had to sacrifice that time which is extremely sad. It is wrong that in order to survive it requires two wages - it shouldn't matter who works and who looks after the children, but it is shameful that it is only the rich who can afford to be stay at home mums (or dads!)

Employers pay a rate of pay and I would suspect that the invention of the tax credit has only helped to feed this 'want it now' society and pushed the cost of living up.

If you choose to have kids then you should do so knowing that you can afford to keep them without help from the state for the majority of time (of course there are times when people need help but this should not be for the majority of a childs life!).

Also this country managed fine for years before tax credits so why not now? (the answer is because as a country we have a dependancy on them now and we need to wean ourselves of like an addict)

I must be getting old. There never used to be tax credits. I remember when child benefit was not paid for the first child. When it was introduced for the first child, the husband's tax code (yes, there was a much higher % of married parents back then) was adjusted. First child benefit was £2.00 per week - cost husband £3.00 to give £2.00 to wife. Struggling on a low wage? Back then....tough....had to live within your means. Why reward people for breeding kids that they can't afford? Well done Tories...we need more of the same.....much much more.

No one said that and you are entitled to get JSA if you are looking for a job, however surely you see that you shouldn't be dependant on state handouts?

When did you last work? If it is a few years, and your wife works more than 24 hours per week, you will not be entitled to JSA.
    Gone ... or have I?
