I think that peoples fears are due to the DRM etc. See here and the heading Controversy Surrounding Trustworthy Computing

Suspect OP is talking about http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/tcpa-faq.html
Hasn't really come to fruition as Microsoft dream.
Could be the biggest boost for Apple / Linux yet. If it happens
Ever stop to think and forget to start again?

just wanted to know people's thoughts on the matter - wasn't trying to be nosy or anything;) seriously, would appreciate other people's thoughts on the topic: seems to be generating quite a debate in computing circles at the moment with the release of vista.

  • Interestingly when you install Vista it takes a snapshot of all your components and ties itself nicely into them. Imagine then your a licensed Vista user with a year old PC lets say. And you think I know I'll upgrade my RAM, Hard Disk, Graphics Card et al. Reboot and Vista says this must be a pirated copy of Vista as when I was installed you had this list of hardware. And now that's changed, I must be living on another computer as a pirated copy so I refuse to work. And the solution for that is the rapid deployment of Service Pack 1. Yes MS know's this the IT Industry have been barking on about it for sometime.

When they say 'trusted', they mean that media companies can trust your computer not to let you copy their files, and not to even let you play them without permission, and to let them remotely revoke permission for you to play files you've paid for... not that you can trust your computer to do what you want and not install spyware without asking you.

So yes, it's very much to be feared: Microsoft want to bring an end to the era of general-purpose computers under user control.
  • I wouldn't worry too much about DRM and Trust platforms. They'll always be ways around it.

These systems have been reverse-engineered and cracked in the past, and the same will be true for the future. Who cares how many bits of encryption its using? When all else fails just by-pass it completely!

Need I point you all to the protection on Mac OS X 10.4 Intel, which prevents installation on anything other then an Intel based Mac! This didn't last long. OS checks to see if it has the authority to install... therefore trick the OS into thinking it has the authority to install. If you wanted to remove the DRM protection on your itunes store downloads, you probably wouldnt have to look far on google to find the actual C source code which will allow you to do it! The problem with all these systems is that they use cryptography, which is computationally expensive.

So long as your not using what's it called again Wintosh or Macdows or even Boot Camp. The sad day Apple signed the death certificate for (Microsoft) Mac OS X - it was always a poor copy of Windows 3.1, 95/98, 2000, 2003, XP and Vista :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: or was it the other way round you can just never tell these days. Fancy MS preaching on about software piracy. Three words Kettle, Pan & Black.

Doesnt XP do this anyway... If you have a legit copy of Vista then there is no problem as all it will take is a re-activation

No Microsoft wants to bring an end to piracy of it's software. That extra couple of Billion dollars it would add to it's annual sales of Windows of $15 billion is essential. They desperately need to make more millionaires of it's employees, and that money has to come from somewhere an ole Bill ain't coffing up. Can you imagine how much interest his money would loose.:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
