Installation of outside tap

I have been quoted £60 for the installation of an outside tap,

I have the tap and my garage has a main water supply.....

Can anyone advise if this is a good price?

Give us an idea of how difficult it woulf be for him?,

does he simply have to go through your garage wall?, it's a rip off, get a handyman.

or does he have to go from one side of the garage to the other? £60 is a good price

  • My lovely wonderful plumber Kevin charges me £15 an hour plus parts. Your plumber will need a metre or so of copper piping, a few joints and some lagging as well as the means to drill through the garage wall and an hour or so to fit the pipe. A fair rate is probably about £40. £60 isn't too bad to be honest. If you are in Co Down area I can PM you my plumber's contact details. He would be hard to beat. :-)

£40 would still be on the high side. Lagging isn't dear, he'll also be using scraps for the pipe and will probably only have to buy 1 joint.

Why not try it yourself, you can buy plastic parts in B&Q, just use plumbers tape instead of solder.

15 or 16mm masonry drill would be about a tenner if you don't have one already though? Plumbing parts would be a few quid for the plastic stuff. Mop and bucket for when it all goes wrong, lifeboat call out if it really goes wrong......:)

    I've been Money Tipped!
If it's just going through a wall and connecting to the mains, you can get a £20 kit with all the bits you need and instructions from B+Q. The kit is a bit more expensive than all the seperate parts, but worth it for piece of mind to know you have everything. Assuming you have a drill with a masonry bit it is dead simple. Really. It is.

Regardless of what people on here tell you, only you can judge if its "reasonable".
Yes he may be using scraps of pipe, yes lagging isn't expensive, he probably already has the relevant drill bit (& bought the expensive drill) & yes it'll only take him about an hour ...
but he has to drive to you, do the work & warranty it, insure, tax & psv his van, public liability, tax, national insurance etc... all before he makes any money
So in answer to your question, do you want to drive to B&Q for the kit with "everything" in it & take a stab at it yourself or can you warrant paying £60 to have it done by a professional (assuming you've already had other quotes)
That all said, plumbers really have got a license to print money :rotfl:
