My OH stuffed a very large quilted throw into the washing machine, while I was away, then forgot about it, it now has a large rust stain on it, I presume from it being left in the machine, any ideas on how to get it off?

my only suggestion is this:
frshly squeezed lemon juice. i had some carpet rust stains and this really faded them although did not totally rmove them.
the idea behind it is neutralisation. iron oxide is an alkali and lemon juice an acid. give it a try!#

Oxalic acid is what I used to use when I worked in a dyehouse.
2grammes oxalic acid per litre of water - 98'C for 30 mins & rinse.
Think you may be able to get it from a chemist.0 -
Can only add whatever you do don't let chlorine bleach anywhere near, it "fixes" the rust stain forever!!!
I've found lemon juice has worked on some rust stains. (Think it depends on the base material. Manmade fibres seem to "hang on" to stains better)You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
Hi glitterygert,
This older thread might give you some ideas: "rusty" mark on shirts from washing machine ?

Hi thanks for all your replies, when puuting the lemon juice on, should I give it a rub, and how long should I leave it on before washing it, and how hot a wash?0

forgot to say that oxalic acid can be used to develop photos.
So anywhere that sells this developing kits will sell Oxalic.
If the rust stain is small then I'd just treat the area of the stain by dipping it into a bucket of the stuff at the above concentration.
Be careful & wear gloves though.
It should not harm most fabrics as long as they are not delicate - e.g cotton, wool, polyester, nylon etc should all be ok0
