Present for Mother!

Options
Hi everyone,

I'm sitting here in MSE towers pondering what to buy my wonderful mum for her birthday, and it suddenly dawned on me that all of you wonderful forum users are always brimming with suggestions for these kind of things.

So any ideas would be much appreciated, she likes all normal mothery type things, I have a few clues, but would really like to get her something v nice,

Thanks everyone

  • A day's shooting.

There are plenty of shooting schools offering a one day beginner's course for women. Just clays, of course - but loads of fun and expert tuition. Check out The Field or Shooting Times.

. . .or a 'pampering day' at one of those girly spa/health places. My missus loved it - specially as she took her Mum.

A day at The Sanctury in Covent Garden is always appreciated. Anyone I know who's ever been loved it!

Or you could get your mum a gift certificate from www.maternityworldwide.org - in addition to a big present. The charge for the certificate will save a woman's life if she suffers complications during pregnancy or childbirth...and the certificate states it is from you and that she is wonderful.

That hot air balloon sounds brill too. You can get the "Red Letter Days" variety of gifts but I hear they are a rip off. Just open the yellow pages and have a look for booking direct.

If she's into animals (not rudely of course!) or conservation you could adopt a tree or an animal in her name.

How motherly is she? If she likes books maybe Selfridges might have a relevant book signing coming up - I got a Nigela Lawson book for my sis from there, with a personalised birthday note from Nigela inside...it made a wanted book just a wee bit more special! Another good one for book signing is the Waterstones down Oxford St near the junction with Tottenham Court Rd.

Then of course there is the theatre...you are truly spoilt for choice in London, you can go with her and treat her to a nice meal beforehand too.

There is tea in the Ritz...it might be booked out by now, and yes it costs a fortune but so what!? You can't have tea at the Ritz somewhere else and it is a memorable and special one off treat...then you can nip round the corner and have a walk in Green Park/Hyde Park...sometimes your mum just wants your time, your company and your conversation more than any gift.

Has your mother any hobbies that you could buy for?

How about the latest book by her favourite author?

Is there something precious to her that has been damaged or lost? If you can find a way to restore it, that will mean more than anything you can buy.

For example, many of us have to stop wearing special rings or other bits of jewelery when we get a bit older and change shap a bit (:) ). Rings can be hung on nice chains so they can still be worn but in a different way. Other pieces might convert into broaches or something. MAybe a much loved piece of furniture can be restored. Stuff like that.

I know from personal experience that presents of that sort are never forgotten.

    happy hunting
  • We women love to be pampered, so a spa treatment is a good idea. If you think that she might not like to go on her own, why not treat her to some luxury skincare essentials, cleanser, toner, exfoliator, face mask, eye cream, moisturiser - that sort of thing, or pampering stuff for the body.
Take her out for a nice lunch/dinner. Book her a hotel for a night/weekend, a show thrown in, if your budget will allow it.
At the end of the day, time spent is appreciated more than anything that money can buy.
  • I'm with Snowy Owl on this one, tea at the Ritz sounds really special and she has your company thrown in for free :)

Also the voucher to help another Mum2be is a really nice idea. The best Christmas gift I got this year was a fruit tree for a family through one of the charity websites, I really cherish the idea that someone else has benefited.

If I was able to I would rate your post for being such a thoughtful young man:)

Next time you know there is a birthday or other ocassion when you need a gift - take a look at the magazine subscriptions under Grabbit while you can.

You need to do this weeks in advance but you can get perfume sets, Body Shop goodies, Toni and Guy hair stuff etc etc.

I got £40 of stuff for a £5 subscription and that was just one offer!
