Just when I get debt free I find out I am not!!!!

Had a really horrid shock this morning, opened the post to find the Council Tax has not been paid all year!!!! £774 we owe! They of course want it now. Will ring them on Monday but they are right, checked OH bank statements and there is no sign of the payments.

The thing is he wants to be responsible for the cash in our house but this type of thing keeps happening!!!! He went for MRI scan and then found out that he was over the limit for his outpatient fees by £160, If he had investigated he could have realised that from 1 Dec his new year started and we would not be forking out £160!!!!! GRRRRRRR

Fortunately on the upside we have a little bit of saving - not much but a fair chunk towards the council tax.

I had plans for that money to be our reserve in case OH can't work, he is self employed and the advice is to have 3 months salary in the bank to guard against time off unpaid.

Never mind.

oh dear, how annoying!! is your man the kind who will admit that these kinds of thing keep happening or is he going to keep insisting he's got it all under control? ....

This is why I have control of the finances, only trouble is credit cards are in his name so I cant call them without him being there. He forgets or doesnt have time to deal with things which ends up with us being charged interest on credit cards etc. I have control of everything now but he has a work credit card for business trips, he was late paying it and we had to pay £5 interest! I begrudge paying interest on work expenses!

Give him a kick in the behind, give them a call and see what you can do about paying the rest off :)

You need a spreadsheet system so that these things are flagged up and you can ensure they are dealt with. I've made myself one a couple of months ago and it's a godsend - it highlights when I need to pay things, when direct debits go out, and when I need to transfer money into my current account. I've also set a reminder on my Microsoft Works Calendar to check my bank account at critical dates, and if I know a payment is due out intermittently (like annual insurances) I have diaried a prompt to check whether I need to regroup my finances.

It's dead simple, not clever at all, but it really works. If you do similar you will find it a huge weight off your mind.

My council sends out a stroppy letter if you are 2 weeks late in paying, never mind 6 months.
Hopefully you won't get any more nasty shocks.

Have you thought about on-line banking, at least then, you would be able to check that everythings gone out each month.

What's this about? I never heard of the NHS charging 'outpatient fees'. What do we all pay our tax and National Insurance for?

I read that as he had gone privately under health insurance, which is capped at so much per annum.

    Good question though.

  • Sorry for the delay in posting back.

He has a healthcare plan with AXA ppp. Because of self employment it seems prudent to be able to get very prompt care so that time off work can be limited. It has worked very well in the past, however, this time he was not losing time off work but was in pain. If he had bothered to check the situation then he would have known the score.

He has now gone and promised his daughter that we will pay her driving lessons at £18 per hour, until she passes her test!!!!!

    He is a lost cause.

Thanks for the support, will give the spread sheet thing a go, I did wonder about a white board listing all the outgoings and the day they should leave the account, if I did it in great big red letters maybe He would notice.
