Glass painting or etching

Hi all - I know that there are some really clever crafty MSE'rs and wondered if you could help me.

For my Christmas table this year I want to have wine glasses decorated with patterns and everyone's name so that it will serve as a place setting as well (my DD is very arty so will be doing this for me!) Each perosn wil then take their glass home at the end of the day with some chocchies in - kind of like a party bag.

What we don't know however is what to decorate teh glasses with. They will need to be washed after lunch, whcih we will obviously do by hand, so I don't want the decorations to come off - any advice please?

Thanks

Perhaps you could buy a glass engraving kit to make the decoration on the glasses permanent? I'm sure places like Hobbycraft must sell them. Prezzybox have a kit for £19.95, and you might be able to find a code on the Vouchers Board for money off or free postage: http://www.prezzybox.com/products/index.aspx?pid=1420
  • Don't think glass paints will wash off if gentle, and if you write the names in the "leading" type pens that is definately hard wearing (gold could look lovely). I've used the pots of paints for vases and they work well.
    I will be rich :rotfl:
  • EDIT: sorry, I just realised that you don't want the decorations to come off (I read it wrong). I'll leave the tip anyway in case it's useful to anyone else. :)

I've read (and you'll have to double-check this because I have never tried it) that you can mix washing up liquid with acrylic paints to make glass paint and it should come off again. Perhaps you could give it a go on a jar or something to see if it works?

  • yeah any lead liner and glass paint from a hobby shop should do, as long as you buy a good paint it will be wash proof, cheaper kids sets just peel off. then put a stencill inside the glass and trace it into the outside with the liner and a thin nozzle. Make sure there are no gaps. Then when its dry you just fill it in with the colour paint, its watery so just kinda load a brush and put it into the area to be paited and it will run out and cover the area, dont brush it or it gets streaky and has see through bits. jsut let it dry properyly and there you go!!

  • oh and I wouldnt buy a glass painting set, you just pay for the box really. the liner and paint are about £2 each in my local art shop, save some pennies!

    This tutorial looks great!

Just be very careful as the acid is dangerous and you will get burned. So wear gloves and rinse the sink properly.
  • Everyone doing glass painting for art coursework has been using glass paint . . . I would imagine that you can buy it at Hobbycraft etc. and it is dishwasher safe. The results are lovely too :)

I've used vitreil (I think thats how its spelt) glass paints and leading, you have to bake them in the oven and then they are dishwasher proof. Most big craft shops should be able to point you in the right direction.
