Mortgages & Pregnancy

Options
Hi, I am hoping to move soon and had a mortgage agreed in principle - however suddenly they say they are not prepared to lend the mortgage as I am now 29 weeks Pregnant & stopping for Maternity leave in 7 weeks.

Whilst off I will still have full pay for 18 weeks and am planning on returning to work asap after this.

Are they able to deny us the mortgage due to my impending maternity leave?

I'm pretty sure if you are in full time employment your job is legally required to be held open for you to go back to and therefore I can't see how the mortgage company can refuse a mortgage on the grounds that you are pregnant. If you are 29 weeks surely they knew when they gave you the decision in principle.

I may be wrong but it smacks of discrimination to me.

    Hi
I remortgaged while on mat leave and all the lender required (first direct) was a letter from my employer stating my salary and when I was due to return.
