*** WEBSITE DANGER CHECKER: Christmas comes early for MSErs ***

:xmassign:
Here's an early Christmas present for all MSErs who would like to improve their computer's security when browsing the Internet or following links to unknown web sites.

A software utility designed to inspect any web page before you visit for signs of exploits, phishing and fraud scams, hacked web sites and malicious lure sites has been released by Exploit Prevention Laboratories for use on computers running Internet Explorer 6 or higher (sorry, not Firefox).

LinkScanner is precisely that: a link scanner. It comes in two versions, LinkScanner Pro, and LinkScanner Lite.

LinkScanner Pro provides a suite of automated features. However, the core components of the Pro version have been incorporated by Exploit Labs in the Lite version, viz:

SafeSearch: this inspects search results on major search engines to inform you, before you visit, which web sites are safe or dangerous and why. An icon placed next to the listing allows you to steer clear of malicious web pages and suspicious sites.

Quick Scan: this allows you to pre-scan any hyperlink for site insecurities, on-demand, by simply right-clicking on the link. Its purpose is to verify links that may be forwarded by friends, or be published in blogs or other forums, before there's any risk of malicious damage being inflicted to your computer.

In summary, LinkScanner Lite does the following:

(1) Automatically inspects all search results from major search engines for exploits and displays advice;

(2) Allows right-click real-time site risk analysis of any html web page for exploits and other risk factors;

(3) Provides manual update facility for continuous protection against the latest vulnerability exploits, including zero-day attacks;

(4) Utilises EPL's proprietary "Exploit Intelligence Network", described by the developers as 'patent-pending dynamic hunting-pot research network, enhanced with real-world user data.'

As with other major security developers like AVG and ZoneAlarm, EPL is offering its 'Lite' version FREE OF CHARGE to PRIVATE USERS.

It is NOT a 'trial' version with time-limited functionality.

Hopefully this useful and intelligent scanning utility will help all MSE Internet Explorer users here to avoid being trapped or infected by malicious sites and malicious links before their surfing takes them too close to the danger areas!

    Thaks for the heads-up, everyone -- and sorry about the buffer prob, ragtime: in view of the later advice here it's probably as well to uninstall.

    I hadn't heard of either of the other two utilities mentioned so it's good to know of their existence.

    Also. . . a friend mentioned that Internet Explorer 7 now provides something similar (though I don't know about assessing search result links before they're clicked on).
