    RTE only transmit on Analogue here in the North so it's not on freeview.You can get RTE on Sky if you subscribe however it is coming to the North in 2012;

    I can get RTE on a analogue TV (I have the aerial ) but if I get a digital TV will I still be able to get it ,or will I have to wait until 2012 .

  • The new TV should be able to do Analogue and DVB-T.

    To get RTE by an Aerial at the moment you will need a group CD aerial, group cd masthead, k\cd thur diplexer, group k aerial for davis and a power unit.

    From next year you should be able to get all from davis. But maybe not all the programmes and not TV3 or TV3e

    OK, here is the answer. All TVs, Digital or otherwise, still contain an analog tuner as well as digital so you will be able to get RTE the same as do currently.
    If you get analogue RTE (I'm assuming you are getting this from Clairmont Cairn Transmitter), there IS a digital service carrying about 6 TV and 10 radio channels on this transmitter however, it transmits in Mpeg4 whereas UK Freeview transmits in Mpeg2 BUT some TVs do have an Mpeg 4 decoder in too, notably those geared up for the new Freeview HD (not available in NI til next year). My mother in law, last week by a complete fluke bought a Samsung 32" Freeview set and it decodes the RTE digital service and the pictures are great, even better than the UK Freeview.
    The availability of the RTE digital service depends upon your location as I'm not sure it's available on all transmitters.

    I'm not going to pretend I know anything about the technology involved but we got digital a yr and a half ago and needed a rooftop aerial fitted. The guy either fitted a booster aerial or box to allow us to recieve digital and RTE etc and we get a brilliant picture of all the channels. Sorry cant remember the costs involved but the fitters are usually happy to quote over the phone. We're in Belfast btw.
    Good luck!

    My diplexer and/or mast head amp packed in a ages ago. Eventually I got round to looking at it earlier tonight and inside the diplexer is damp, so I suspect both will need renewed.

    However, I have Sky so get RTE through that, and with the digital switch over coming I'll probably just wait until then for the reasons below.

    Now my questions.

    What channels will the Divis muxes be on post switch over?

    What channels will the RTE (or ROI) muxes be on?

    Answers to those questions will probably determine the diplexer needed.

    What is Soarview? Is that the ROI's freeview for ALL channels? It seems from my reading that it broadcasts MPEG-4 and therefore many UK TVs (those not HD freeview?) will not be capable of viewing it as NI freeview is MPEG-2. Again from reading, it seems my LG 42LD450 does have an MPEG-4 decoder as I can watch DivX (after performing the LG usb hack).
    Jim.
