He installs fancy curtain rails, intends to make curtains, cooks, and puts washing out.

    What more do you want?

Hi, loads of helpful info here for you so best of luck.......

Not sure if your Q about when to sew on the tape has been answered but I would put it on almost last. Before hemming though if you are going down the hanging before hemming route.

If you cut the fabric correctly, you fold the top of the curtain over place the lining over the raw edge, but a bit below the top of curtain, and then place tape over raw edge of lining. When you sew top and bottom of tape all will be secured.

Stitching for top is seen on the right side. Stitching at hem of lining is hidden anyway and stitching for bottom of curtain can be machined or hand sewn depending on fabric and personal taste.

If you have a couple of old tea towels, why not make a mock curtain to go through all of the procedures? Putting curtain and lining face to face, lining not as wide as curtain so it isn't seen when turned inside out, putting on tape and hemming etc...... if you go wrong you have something very small to look at and then pick apart to do again. Much cheaper than making a ricket with decent fabric.

Last tip ..... for tidying the long strings you will have when you gather the tape...... cut an 'H' shape from yoghurt pot plastic and wrap long strings around it and then safety pin it at the top out of sight.

Best of luck with it and please, please let us all see the finished article we are all full of admiration.

Only if you have a large tool kit - Please send pictures of it first! :p BTW Can you service a Rayburn??????

I do indeed have a large tool kit, original hand tools only, no electrics!:D Oh, OK, I have a cordless drill put away somewhere, with lots of attachments, haven't needed it much in recent years.

I have never dealt with a Rayburn but do have my first aiders certificate & am a dab hand at carpet burns:D.
