Hairspray and Straightening Irons?

Probably a really dumb question (!), but I read a couple of tips in a magazine yesterday about applying hairspray before you use straightening irons and was tempted to try them.....but, as hairspray is highly flammable is it really safe to use 200 degree straightening irons on top of it?!

I've used hairspray then straightened my hair and not had my head burst in to flames yet.
Doesn't really work that well though.:j0 -
I don't get why you would use hairspray with a straightening iron. Am I being really thick? Once the hair's straight it stays that way, well mine does anyway, what's the point of the hairspray? Does it make it stay even straighter?0

Mine doesn't always stay straight once straightened. It helps it hold the 'straight' if your hair is naturally very wavy/curly. I use it on my fringe to keep it in place & straight, and to stop my hair going wavy if I tuck it behind my ears when going out or something. I usually straighten a layer of my hair properly then spray it with hairspray and give it another quick ones over with my ghds, then do another layer just to keep it straighter through the night really.
As I said though, it doesn't really work in the way suggested in the OP. It just brushes out as you run a brush/comb through your hair when you're straightening it. I find straightening creams like hot straight work better than the hairspray.:j0 -
Heat protecting sprays seem to have a sort of hairspray type effect and are presumably designed for use with straightening irons0

Hi i used to use hairspray after straightening but it doesnt hold. I was recommended a john frieda 3 day straightening spray in boots, here is the link, http://www.boots.com/en/John-Frieda-Frizz-Ease-3-DAY-Straight-spray-100ml_1162699/ I can highly recommend it, i use it almost every week unless i fancy wavy hair.

Interesting! I've used it this week and think it's rubbish :rotfl::j0 -
I'd be seriously wary of using normal hairspray before using hot straighteners! Not only because they are likely to gum-up the plates on the straightener meaning cleaning (which itself can take the surface off most ceramic plates leaving the harsh metal touching your hair and so more likely to cause very very damaged hair as a result) but also because of the alcohol content in most hair sprays. This dries out hair without the fact that it heats up fast and extra dry hair combined with lots and lots of heat is a good remedy for frizz and lots of it!
I'd go for the John Freida new stuff (currently £6.99 or 2 for £7.50 at Boots) or a heat hair protectant which so many brands seem to offer now. If you do feel the need to use hair spray too maybe use it after the hair has been straightened and has cooled down. Once hair is damaged you can't repair it, you have to wait a long time for it to grow out.0
