How long do you wait to hear after an interview?

I had an interview 10 days ago on a Monday, I was told I should hear whether I had got the job 'early next week' ie the beginning of this week. I do know the HR / recruitment section of the company isn't very good.
Do you think it is permissable to contact the company to ask how I got on and if so how long would you leave it?
Thanks - from someone who is not very patient at all!!!!

I would contact them early next week and see how things are.It could be they aqre still interviewing?0

I'd try phoning today (Thursday) and say that in view of the long weekend coming up, you were just wondering if there was any news?Signature removed for peace of mind0

If I hadn't heard on Monday, then I would have just let it go. Move on.0

I just assume if I've not heard then I've been unsuccessful. More and more companies are just not bothering to contact people if they've not got the job, which I find rude and disrespectful!!
I had an interview with a big, successful retail company a few weeks ago (admin in their head office), they said they would let people know by the end of the week, and nothing! You think a massive company like that would have the courtesy to let people know if they weren't successful!0 -
I give a week and then get impatient and start contacting. If you really want the job and are keen, you should be contacting them after a week (or 2 - 3 working days). Sometimes it's a test of how keen you are and others maybe be because you are second choice and they are waiting for the preferred candiate to make their mind up.
I get frustrated when they don't bother to contact you after the interview. I had one with XL Airlines and never got an answer and then realised they had gone under. While I was annoyed at not getting the job, I was glad I hadn't relocated and been stuck with a job for a short time to then be unemployed again.0 -
whatever they tell u is a lie anyway, so just keep it moving. if they want u, they'll phone.0

I would probably let it go, if they want to hire you they will call.
I have to say that I have interviewed staff in the past but not called back people I dont want to employ. Yes I know thats pretty mean, but I just loose track sometimes and dont get around.
I did have a horrible experience once, I interviewed a guy who was just awful. The day after I interviewed him I fell ill and was off work for about a week altogether. When I got back I discovered he had phone 10 times, and then he sent me messages on my facebook (he actually tracked me down!) Very scary. I had to phone him to say a) he didnt have the job and b) if he contacted me outside of work again I would consider taking it further!Deposit £5880/£10,000Sparkle Challenge - Loose 1 stone 0/14lbs
