When the knifes in can it ever be taken out?

Shortly after I started my current job I had a run in with the boss due to being given a different job to the one advertised. Then had another fall out of overtime pay a few months later.

But ever since then I have never been asked to do overtime again, any new employees automatically leap frog me on the ladder so am purposely being held back (this includes part time student workers), the list of !!!!!! could go on over the space of my 5 years employment.

Its obvious he has it in for me and I just feel so totally helpless, its not like he is rude to me or anything in fact he's almost to nice.

What's the best thing to do here?

Yep, if I were you I'd take this as a lesson in "why not to upset the boss". Sure, there are situations when you and the boss aren't going to see eye to eye, but however passionately you feel about these situations, it's always best to handle them constructively rather than with "a run in". At the end of the day, the boss generally has more power than the employee.

Many years ago I had a boss who would form a judgement on people then keep it forever. It ended up that some of his rubbish staff could literally do no wrong and those working their *sses off never got recognition.
I'm afraid the only way out of this situation is another job. And don't be tempted (like I did) to tell them what you think of them on your way out. Because if you later move jobs again, you might need him for a second or third reference.

Firstly, don't assume the worst. Has your boss been left with an incorrect perception of your expectations - for instance, might he believe that you are not prepared to do overtime?

Could you have a word and say that you have noticed that others are receiving requests / duties which are different from you and that you would also be interested in those areas? The response will then show you where you really stand. This approach also allows the manager a face saving way of coming back from the edge and reviewing his take on the previous incident and of you.

If you continue to be treated differently then look at the company's bullying policy and follow the recourse procedures there.

Sorry for the delays in replying, I never noticed I had any replies.

Getting out is the only answer I can see but there is sweet FA out there, its so dire. I just feel totally and utterly trapped.

I mean I applied for a job, got it, discovered it wasn't as discussed in the interview, I wasn't rude, I just questioned him. Then regarding overtime again same issue time and a half to be paid, only got paid regular time, when questioned denied all knowledge. Sure I should of got this in writing but I never even got a contract let alone anything else, its a low paid job. Warning bells should of triggered in my head when I was offered the job there and then on the day of the interview, I guess they were desperate as they probably had a bad rep, and well I was desperate after being unemployed for 18 months at the time.

I can relate totally to this as this is whats happening in our place, The only people moving anywhere are those who are late, or not there because the boss backs them all the way. Prime example, the Wednesday before Easter the guy that works with me was sick, (without exaggerating he is of at least 1 day per week) but back to our story.. He was also of the Thursday leave us in a pickle as coming up to the holidays we have a lot of work to get out, I got it out. So back to work today after Easter holidays, the guy returns, the boss is straight over and instead of reprimanding him is laughing and joking away, me for my efforts before the holiday got the joy of sweeping and tidying up while he gets my work which I enjoy doing. I'm good enough when no one else is there, but once they are i'm good for nothing.

Its this type of unfairness which has made me seriously considering breaking some type of body part to get some time of on the sick, I am just sick of it and there is nothing I can do.
