What do I do now?

Ok, so I had an abundance of cupboard stock and I took your advice and started to use it up. So since Christmas we've had all sorts of concoctions for meals - most of them turning out quite well as it happens.

Now the store cupboard is virtually empty. Theres about four tins left. What do I do now?

I can't say I have noticed any vast difference in my weekly shopping bill but it is going to go up drastically now if I start to buy in the stuff again each week.

How do I handle this one?

i only ever buy tins on offer, the only store cupboard things the i buy regularly are rice and pasta, altho i'd have a breakdown in there was only 4 tins in there

i would suggest you buy what you need for your meal plan and be flexable with offers

To me stock cupbaord is about having stuff in in case of harder times etc so I don't get the point of running it down - unless you are in the 'hard time'. I rotate stuff so there is always stuff there but nothing goes out of date etc. I bulk buy offers and bargains and then find ways of using them over the next few months whilst also buying the next lot of stock....

The really puzzling bit is why no difference in shopping bills if using storecupboard items - has everything else gone up so much?

For now I would suggest only buying what you need for this weeks meals, but making your shopping list flexible so that you can take advantage of offers, bargains and reduced items.

Keep an eye on sites such as Approved Foods in case they have items on that you would usually buy (be strong, there's some amazing bargains but no point in buying extra things just because they are cheap or you'll end up spending more!) also Halfcost and when they do take the opportunity to stock up (watch out for p&P)

Move those tins to the front and start building up a stock again slowly. Buy tins on offer-I only buy baked beans, corned beef etc when there is a good offer . I usually buy an extra tin of tomatoes whenever I go into Aldi.

Marks and Spencer' food hall is worth checking out too. They sometimes have chicken in white sauce for half price-that makes a nice pie for three of us with the addition of a couple of leeks.

I agree with Thirzah, start building up your stock again, and as quintwin says, shop for what you need for this week and start buying extras when you see good offers.

I never run my store cupboard too low, I keep a good stock in case of emergencies so it's a rolling thing, using up everything in rotation but never letting stocks get too low
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D
