Council tax arrears 2009/2010

My Partner & I have had about £300 oustanding in Council Tax Arrears from 2009/2010. At the time we just never paid it, and it got past on to AA Hutton.

Now last year I set up a payment plan with AA Hutton for £40 per month. I paid for 3 months, then lost my job and didn't tell them. Didn't pay them again, they contacted me on 11th April and explained they needed payment, I paid £40 then and agreed I would start up with the £40 payments again. Recieved a letter dated 11th April to say because I didn't comply with the payment plan this had now been cancelled and I was to contact them. I assumed because I had spoken to them on the phone that day it was just a crossover.

Had my partner call me today, Sherriff officers at the door at lunch handing us notices to pay the full amount in 14 days. We just cannot aford the full amount. They've added £65 sherrif fee's on top now.

My partners is going to go to Council tomorrow and see if we can deal with them insted of AA Hutton. We can afford about £60 a month now and hoping they will take that.

Can the council take back passed on debt? It would be easier for us to deal with the council and will defiently not be missing anymore payments. I know it is our own fault for missing the payment plan. I had agreed to start up again 11th April and thought everything was fine.

I;m worried about this 14 day letter! help!

    Hi

You are in Scotland so need to speak to the Scottish section of national Debt line or CCCS. They can take much more action against you than in England and Wales.

There is no chance of a full and final.

What do you mean they can take much moe action againt us? Thank you for your help. Didn't think there would be a chance of full & final. I;m hoping the council will take back the debt as we have been moved into our new property for 6 monhs now and have paid concil tax on time and in full. I hope we can come to an arrangment to pay aout £50 or £60 a month back rather than finding the £300 odd upfront in 14 days.

    Thanks
