M6 Variable Speed Sign Camera's

I avoid the M4 now and use the back roads. Same journey time within 3 - 4 mins and I don't have the hassle of traffic jams.
This.
It's a much more fun drive too, so long as you don't end up in a stand off with 20 cars behind you and in front is some plonker in an X5 who can't reverse without repeatedly hitting the hedge.
That happens less often than silly jams on the M4 or it's junctions though. I really miss the days when everyone did 90 in the outside lane and the road flowed perfectly most days, even in rush hour.0 -
It was big news when these first came out on the M25, and on the M42, though that was a while back now.
Also you can see the cameras on the gantries on the opposite carriageway.
However, unlike the M42 and M6 there are a few gantries where there are only cameras on one side, so be careful!
Never seen them on the news when they came out. I work away a lot, so it might have been then or it might because I don't live in the local area or maybe because I don't by newspapers.0 -
Those cameras not only enforce the variable speed limit they also enforce lanes that have been closed off (red cross instead of speed). When the speed is reduced on a sign they allow a slight delay before changing the camera speed setting.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

It is a temporary sign which they put up when they are on the bridge ahead. You're stuffed if you are in lane 2 or 3 and miss it because your view of the hard shoulder is blocked by other vehicles.
Most of them do that anyway. I avoid the M4 now and use the back roads. Same journey time within 3 - 4 mins and I don't have the hassle of traffic jams.
Only if you're breaking the speed limit. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
Can you just point out the bit in my post, where I said I was breaking the speed limit?
I didn't write that you were. But then, why should the cameras worry you, if you stick to the speed limit? The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

You implied.Wouldn't it be better to stick to the indicated speed limit, than worry about speed cameras? But then, why should the cameras worry you, if you stick to the speed limit?
I'm not worried by speed camera's. I asked a question to clarify what I wrongly thought the rules were. I thought the camera's were meant to be in full view and well signed posted to avoid the accusation that they are there just as a money raiser. That question has been answered.0 -
Agree the cameras are pretty obvious what with the road markings and the signs. There's also safeguards such as a system to monitor what the variable signs are saying and shut them down if the signs are faulty. This one really is about compliance moreso than enforcement.
The theory is to smooth out traffic flow by slowing down the traffic piling into the back of an existing jam and thus allowing jams to clear. Time will tell if this actually works or not but if it does they get to save money in not upgrading the M6, which is a lot more than the revenue from a few fines.0 -
You implied.

Oh dear, you infer far too much when reading others posts. I was merely pointing out, instead of worrying about what colour they were, or where they are positioned, drivers should be more concerned about keeping to the speed limit. If you chose to read it as though I was implying that you were speeding, that is something between you and your conscience. The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0
