Debt letter from NCO, help?

Hi all,
My partner received a letter today from NCO in Preston.
It says they are chasing a debt which was originally with Orange for £93.54. We haven't heard anything about this since 2006.
He had a phone with them and requested the contract cancelled, which they didn't do. He paid in full and they kept charging every month. At the time they accepted that this debt was settled and there would be no further contact (not in writing, mind. And even if they did we wouldn't have the letters now) - we have heard nothing since today.
I'm sure it must be nearing the 6 years now - which I think means they wouldn't be able to chase the debt after that. (Correct me if i'm wrong)
What should I do?
We have no debts whatsoever (apart from this) so I don't really know what to do in this situation.
Thanks in advance.:)

Hi
The '6year's would be 6years from the last time he paid anything towards the debt or wrote to the creditor or a DCA to acknowledge he owed the money. If its more than 6years since his last payment and providing they don't have a CCJ for this debt (pretty unlikely I'd say) then it would be statute barred.
Creditors/debt collectors are allowed to chase statute barred debts until the debtor writes to say that they believe its SB and do not intend to pay.
Can you find out /check when he last paid anything towards this?
If you are writing to them and its nearing the SB timeframe then the only letter it is 'safe' to send is the prove it letter - see here http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=11570893&postcount=2
as it specifically does not acknowledge that they money is owed.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -
I had a letter from NCO out of the blue today too. For an old credit card debt from years ago which I think got sold off. Which like you, I'm sure is nearing statute barred time.
Looks like they are going through a book of old debts to see what they can cream off.0
