Price the job

Hi

I'm wanting to get a shower put over my bath, and my plumber has quoted me the following cost structure:

New shower Mira Go 8.5kw
£85
Electric Shower Installation (fitted)
£60
Plumbing Materials
£50
Electric Costs (labour and materials)
£220

Is this a reasonable cost for the job?

Thanks in advance.

  • I assume this is to put a complete new shower in place and not simply replacing an old electric shower? Price sounds reasonable to me for what you have there however what what about finishing the job, will the walls not need pastered or tiled? Always advisable to get a 2nd quote though to compare.
  • This would be for installing a shower unit over a bath; not replacement of any existing unit. So in other words at the end I'd have a bath with a shower unit at one end of it. No tiling or plastering required.

The electrician's cost will depend on how far from the consumer unit the shower is. In one house I owned the cable just had to go through one wall to reach the shower but in my current house it has to go about a mile [well about 15 metres!] which influenced my decision to stick with an 8.5kw shower rather than upgrade to 9.5 which would have required thicker cabling. Cost to connect existing cable to new shower which plumber attached to wall was £50.

Also depending on the house wiring, a new switch fuse (single fuse consumer unit) and RCD (trip) may be required. It may also be that the bathroom electrics are brought up to the latest regs.

Get a breakdown of the electrical quote too, the plumbers looks OK
