Becoming a Kitchen Fitter

Options
Hi All,

I am becoming extremely irritated with my office job at the moment. Through no fault of the job, it is a interested role (Payroll Admin), but everyday now, I am sitting at a computer and feeling I am not achieving anything with my life.

So I looked into becoming a kitchen fitter. Don't ask me why, but I was standing in my parents kitchen looking at it and thinking "That is very impressive, that someone has put this all together and it looks so marvelous". The further I look into the field, the more it excites me. I have always been a very creative and hands-on person, I just never took the route after leaving school and went for the "easy" money.

What I am asking today is, if there are any Full Time Kitchen Fitters here who know the steps that somebody like me would have to take to become a Kitchen Fitter? I am interested in doing all aspects (Electrics and Gas/Plumbing).

So what courses are advisable to start off with? Exact specifics would be great!

I do hope I can get some clear advice because researching on the internet seems to be a bit all over the place!

Thanks all!!

  • Have you ever fitted a kitchen yourself, or been around when one was being fitted? Over the years we have fitted five kitchens in various houses and I would never do it again. It's really hard work and there is a huge amount of time consuming and hidden work involved. One problem you will have is that people think that it's an easy job, just putting together flat packs and throwing some worktop on so when you quote them £1500 or so they will think you are ripping them off. There must be millions of fitters struggling for work as most people have a go at fitting their own kitchens nowadays.

As you say you are a creative person, have you thought about being a kitchen designer instead?

You cannot do electricals and gas without doing a proper certification. Also you need to have actual manual skills because there's not a single house with a square wall in this entire country yet you've got to make a perfectly square kitchen unit look like its fitted in one.
