Thank you everyone, great tips as usual

Clapton - no, we aren't really solvent, hence the urgent need for me to get driving and get an evening job. The savings are acutally a donation from parents for the sole use of paying for the car and insurances. We are praying that in 2 years we'll have another income of at least £400 per month from me working evenings and weekends which will help to keep us a float.

Thanks again, I really appreciate your help.
  • Hey, new to all this so not even sure if I am posting this message in the right place. I have been inspired by all you folks who are clearing their debts but what do you do when you cannot afford to pay off what you owe. I have been turned down for a consolidation loan but of affordability issues and don't want to go through courts or anything. Is there something in between the two that would work. I have debts of £22,000 and about £200 a month to pay them off. Help!
  • CAn you not use public transport to get you to your evening job ?

Hi andi, best thing to do is to start a new thread explaining this and also do a SOA http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=107280 so we can work out where to cut certain things out.
  • Mobile - What do you use your mobile for ? I understand your husbands mobile (though orange I think might do cheaper with unlimited calls) but what do you use yours for I'm almost certain we can get it down to something cheaper.

As for the driving lessons, how long have you been doing them ? Are you not able to get someone else to take out out in their car so you could cut lessons down to once every two weeks? Also with your current debt can you afford a car at the end of all of this ? If not then save your money on the lessons till you can. It costs a small fortune to do the tests nowadays plus theres the petrol, tax, mots etc on top of that as I said previously can you not get public transport ?

Good luck with it all, you've made the right first move.
