If I had gum disease, would my dentist have mentioned it?

To me, my gums look a bit inflamed, with a tendency to bleed when I brush. (Been that way for years...I'm 30) Dentist only said that I had 'good teeth' (apart from the front two which needed filling  first filling ever though) This was my first visit to a dentist after a break of about 12 years.

He certainly SHOULD do. And he can have his pants sued off if he doesn't.

It depends whether he has taken the time to look properly though and do a thorough examination.

It's not really any consolation that you can sue him if you've lost allyour teeth in the process.

After 12 years, and with bleeding gums, I would have hoped that a clean & polish at the very least was done as well as the fillings.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I did have an x ray at my last check up and this didnt show anything so maybe it is the brushing. I am looking into getting a phillips sonicare but it seems there are quite a few, some 129pounds down to about 70. Are they all good or would you recommend a certain one?

there is an offer at the moment for a Phillips Sonicare for £32 including delivery,

(borrowed from a certain hot uk deals site)

they were in stock, then out of stock the next day, now back in stock

very good price for this toothbrush!

My dentist changed about six years ago. The old one always used to encourage me to see the hygienist after each visit , which I did.

The new dentist does not seem to employ a hygienist, and does a quick scrape and polish himself during a 5 minute check-up.

I find it hard to believe that my teeth would not benefit from a proper session with a hygienist as before.

I do not particularly want to change dentist, is it possible for me to arrange a trip to a hygienist at another practice ?

I am happy to pay the going rate.

Doesn't usually work like this, but have a word with your dentist and see what he suggests.

  • Just found this thread after spending an hour yesterday and an hour today having my whole mouth deep scaled and scraped.

Not a nice experience but if it stops me losing my teeth and improves the health of my gums then its worth it.

Mine cost £42 on the NHS plus the price of a subscription for anti biotics which I need to take for a month.

To my untrained eye I have receding on three of my top teeth but after listening to the hygienist reading out the numbers to the assistant to put in the computer, most of my back teeth or should I say gums are quite badly affected. I believe one is the best and 6 or 7 is quite bad?

I bought some mouthwash which it says on the bottle should just be used for a month while gums are healing.

Is there a particular toothpaste that is any better than others to use in this situation and would a regular mouthwash be of any help? My hygienist seems to think they are a waste of money.
I have the little brushes which I use after cleaning my teeth........should I be using them before?

Ohhh I never knew you could quote yourself :rotfl:

Anyhow........have just been today for my three monthly check up with the hygienist and my hard work is paying off but further improvement still required. :T

I was listening intently to her reading out the numbers as I remembered a lot of sixes and fives last time I went.

Heard lots of ones this time with the occasional three and just one hot spot of eight

Overall though Im pleased with the improvement and Ive got to go back in another 3 months when she will decide if I need any more deep scaling .

It was a horrible experience so I am going to get even better and more fastidious about cleaning with the little brush things.
    Make £10 a Day Feb .....£75.... March... £65......April...£90.....May £20.....June £35.......July £60

My hubby has bad gum disease. A few years ago he had to go to a different denstist for the deep clean quarter mouth thing, but since then he is just back on normal 6 month checkups, which dont seem to be working as hes had several infected pockets. All they are doing is 6 month check up and scale and polish. He is an NHS patient still at the same dentists but seems to see a different one everytime.
Anyhow my main concern is the relationship of gum disease to heart attacks, I have read there is an increased risk and he also has a family history of people with heart attacks, what can we do?

Find a dentist that actually wants to 'look after him' rather than process him for the funding points they receive.
