Do you owe anything on it (ie have you missed payments?). I wasnt in arrears with my phone contract, but wanted out as soon as I went BR, as I didnt want the commitment, and wanted to cut the bills, so I contacted O2 and emailed them a copy of my BR Order, and they came back to me and gave me 48 hours to decide if I wanted to keep my number and transfer it to a pay and go Sim or not (I didnt - I wanted rid of number!) - I went back and said no thanks as I had already sorted a sim, and they shut it down about 1 hour later. Dont want the handset back, and 20 months worth of contract gone!
