My partner has had a letter from this company this morning saying he owes approx £8000 but can pay half now and debt will be finalised. He doesn't owe this money! Our credit files show no such debt and this is the first time we've heard of it. He works abroad so can't chase it up and when I phoned them to say he wouldn't be able to ring until next week she was awfully rude. The only debt he has is a current car finance with barclays from last year which is still running with no missed payments. Could this debt have been sold on? Surely it would show on either experian or equifax if it existed?

Sounds like it could be a case of mistaken identity (or the debt company phishing to find the actual debtor with the same name as your partner).

You could send the prove it letter (its usually advised not to sign this anyway so you could perhaps even send it on his behalf before he is home- with his permission of course) - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=11570893&postcount=2

If she calls you and she's rude again, tell that yachneh that she has the vocabulary of a common guttersnipe and that she is hardly a credit to her employers to whom you will be making a formal complaint.
