Warning re escape card's

i would just like to warn everyone about these escape mastercard pre-paid cards.

my partner and i both had these cards with money on them to use in case of emergencys. unfortunatly my partner lost his wallet yesterday and so contacted the escape customer services to report the card lost and to get a replacment card sent out. only to find that 1) they were wanting to charge him £10 for a replacment card and 2) they had been taking money off the card each month because it hadnt been used!

no were in the paper work we recieved when we took the card out did it state that if inactive for more than 90 days they charge you each month!!

so i thought i should warn other people about this so that you too are not getting money taken off you.

i personally think this is an absolute disgrace that they do not state anywere in the paper work you get when you get the card that they do this and so for people who like us thought it would be a great idea to have one of these cards with money on it in case of an emergency are being ripped off without even knowing about it.

Prepaid cards aren't covered by the FSCS either (Financial Services Compensation Scheme) so if the company goes bust or similar, any money you had in the account goes bye bye. No comeback for you or on the company.

I have a Kalixa card and know full well that any funds on the card are essentially only there thanks to the good will of the company and know I have no contractual comeback if they choose to take it. I therefore only ever top it up for certain higher risk / smaller purchases, immediately before I make said purchase.

If you're sure there was no mention of a dormancy fee then I would complain in writing, asking them to restore the money. Check carefully the T+Cs you have.

Assuming they don't pay it back and it's a UK outfit, then all you can do (and it might be worth doing) is sue them. Under £5000 and it's small claims track. You can do it online.

You can only sue if you've identified that they have broken the agreement you had with them and that you have lost money as a result. "agreement" is usually what is in the written T+Cs, but it may also include what was said to you or what is common sense if the T+Cs don't cover all eventualities.
